With a big down day on Thursday, June 26, the stock market has returned to the 2008 market lows hit in mid-March. It is important to maintain perspective in troubled times. The market is down lately, we have a large problem with energy prices, but there are plenty of really solid fundamentals. I do not think that now is the time to exit the market.

Most businesses start tightening their purse strings during challenging economic cycles and IT investments are quite frequently the first to be cut. This isn't a new phenomenon or a revelation, but rather obvious to most business people.
When your company goes into survival mode your choices are to focus IT spending on saving money through reducing inefficiencies or creating money by being innovative, or both. Most decision makers appear to focus their energies on cost cutting IT projects and the appetite for risk is much lower than usual.

If you're an investor, you probably haven't enjoyed opening your account statements the past few months. In January alone, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 4.6 percent. And since the Dow hit its all-time high of over 14,000 in early October 2007, the index has dropped more than 11 percent.
